Where an own-shop file is usually late
There is no platform prompt
Marketplace sellers are chased by the platform. An own-shop brand discovers the duty through an audit letter or a business customer’s question instead.
The two-month contract clock has already run
The participation contract is due within two months of first placing household packaging on the market, so an established shop is usually reviewing earlier years as well.
The appointment date is misread
An appointment takes effect at the end of a calendar quarter, which has to be planned rather than discovered.

I sell only a few parcels into Austria. Does the duty still apply?
Austria has no de-minimis threshold. The small-quantity regime expired on 31 December 2022, so volume changes the tariff rather than the obligation.
Can I register myself?
Since 2023 a distance seller without an Austrian seat is not able to carry out the licensing itself; it runs through the appointed representative.
Do I need an Austrian company or VAT number?
This is a waste-law duty rather than a tax one, and it does not by itself create an Austrian VAT registration.
How long does it take?
It depends on document completeness, third-party processing and the quarter in which the appointment takes effect. We do not publish a guaranteed timeline.
